Australian Film Maker
Luke Sorensen is a renowned surf film maker from the Gold Coast, Australia, whose unique perspective and imagery brings to life the intricate elements that exist in surfing, whether it be the awesome power of a Kirra freight train or a peeling First Point gem. His work stems from a lifetime spent in the water, exploring the possibilities and perils of the aquatic realm, capturing the visual pleasures that exist within. His major releases center around alternative surfing style and techniques such as longboarding, retro and old school surfing, as well as the lifestyles and people who embrace these styles as their own.
In 1997 Luke’s first release was a collaboration with legendary surf film maker Chris Bystrom, who at the time was focusing his interests into longboarding and its world wide resurgence. ’Soul Patrol’ featured an amazing array of longboarding imagery from across the Pacific, epic Hawaiian, Australian and US surfers and locations, spanning 38 years of longboarding history. From here they produced 3 more films, much to the delight of an ever growing population of modern longboarders then taking to the water. ‘Cruise Control’,’Living Long’ and ‘Quiver’ were to follow, taking in the exotic world of surf travel, generations of longboarding legends, and further exploring the developing styles from the new breed of longboarders and alternative surfers. Along the way Luke brought images back from places afar, a window into the waves, people and culture that represented the second dawn of classic surfing.
2011 will see the return of Luke’s work to the surfing arena, with the release of his first solo project, this film is yet to be named. A retrospective look at 16 years of capturing surf images from the Gold Coast and beyond, this deluxe surfing DVD will showcase a truly awesome array of waves, stories and sessions; From absolutely mind blowing South Stradbroke to secret mid NSW coast points, Kirra resurrected from the cutting room floor and grinding like you’ve NEVER seen her, longboarding and shortboarding styles and waves from years gone by and some of the coolest water footage you’ve ever seen!
